That about sums up how most villagers in Fiji’s Yasawa and Mamanuca islands feel after the most brutal storm in living memory charged through their lives, ripping apart their humble houses and smashing their food crops to smithereens.
These gracious and welcoming people, who pre-cyclone had few of the material possessions you and I take for granted, now have even less. Yet they’re smiling again (only just) as word and basic provisions reach them from the outside world. Through the rubble that was once their home, the fallen trees and strewn vegetation, they see that their fellow human beings care, that they want to help – and they are deeply heartened.
Vinaka Fiji, having helped over the past six years to make a difference in the lives of the villagers in these stunningly beautiful but impoverished islands, is working in three ways to assist with recovery in the areas most impacted.
